Remo Freuler revealed to Corriere dello Sport that he spoke with Jose Mourinho’s Roma before finalising an £8 million transfer to Premier League team Nottingham Forest during the summer transfer window.
Freuler was referred to as the conductor of Atlanta’s rock opera. Since making the off-season move to the City Ground, the Swiss international has gained plenty of admirers for his excellent game reading and natural leadership abilities.
These days, the Swiss international is one of the first names on Steve Cooper’s team sheet. His unwavering work ethic and precise passing provide a foundation for players like Morgan Gibbs-White and company to excel at the other end of the field.
Some people were shocked when Freuler decided to leave Atalanta, regulars in the Champions League, for a Nottingham Forest team that is probably going to spend 2022–2023 fighting for survival.
Freuler, however, is adamant that he required a new beginning and a challenge after spending six years in Italy.
“It wasn’t an easy decision. I was at home in Bergamo, I felt part of a family. I still have many friends at Atalanta, and off the pitch. But, after seven years, I felt the need to change. I’m not a kid anymore, and I believed the time was right,” Freuler explains.
Freuler, who was selected 52 times for his country, played more than 250 times for Atalanta between 2016 and 2022. The former Grasshoppers star suggested that Roma had expressed interest, so he could have also stayed in Italy.
“It’s possible (I could have joined another club). Roma? There are always rumours. And maybe yes, with them there was something,” Freuler adds. “But until you put pen to paper in football there is nothing concrete.”
Nottingham Forest are actively looking to add more players as the January transfer window approaches in just one month. The recently named best player in Brazil, Gustavo Scarpa, is joining on a free transfer from Palmeiras.
Jamil Siewert of Fortuna Dusseldorf is another player they are keeping an eye on. According to reports, Forest are also looking for a number nine, with Walid Cheddira of Bari one possibility.
