The TotalEnergies CAF Champions League semifinals are set, and they promise some exciting matchups, with a North African derby between Al Ahly and Esperance and a North vs. South contest between Wydad Athletic Club and Mamelodi Sundowns.
Al Ahly secured their place in the semifinals by beating Raja Club Athletic, with the first leg’s 2-0 scoreline proving decisive.
Esperance reached their third semifinal in six seasons by defeating Algeria’s JS Kabylie 2-1 on aggregate, having won the first leg 1-0.
Ahly and Esperance met at the same stage of the competition last season, with Ahly winning the tie 4-0.
In the second semifinal, Wydad needed penalties to progress after drawing 1-1 with Tanzania’s Simba.
Wydad will face Mamelodi Sundowns, who progressed to the semifinals after thrashing Algeria’s CR Belouizdad 6-2 on aggregate.
Sundowns last made it to the semifinals in the 2018-19 season, where they faced Wydad and lost 2-1 on aggregate.
The first leg matches of the semifinals are scheduled for May 12, with the return fixtures a week later.
