Bayern Munich emerged victorious with a 1-0 win against Freiburg in a crucial Bundesliga game on Saturday. The game’s only goal came from Matthijs de Ligt’s 51st-minute strike, earning the league leaders revenge after losing to Freiburg in the DFB Pokal during midweek. However, the game’s post-match celebrations were marred by controversy as Bayern captain Joshua Kimmich headed towards the Freiburg fans and celebrated in a disrespectful manner.
The Freiburg players quickly confronted Kimmich, and Michael Gregoritsch even pushed him before he was escorted out of the pitch.
After the game, Kimmich apologized for his actions, saying, “There were a lot of emotions; we lost a lot. It was a very important victory for us. The cup was deep. I let myself be carried away, that you don’t have to do it. You can look at it that way, it was unsportsmanlike.”
Despite the altercation, this was Bayern Munich’s second consecutive league win under new coach Thomas Tuchel, who replaced Julian Nagelsmann. Bayern now holds a two-point lead over Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga table.
Bayern will now shift their focus to their upcoming Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City, with the first leg scheduled to take place on April 11th.
