Another humiliating loss has brought to light the flaws in Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool team as Manchester City beat the Reds 4 – 1 at the Etihad.
There was every reason to believe the Reds were still in the game at halftime with the score at 1-1. Within the first seven minutes of the second half, that hope was not more.
City scored twice, and neither Klopp nor Liverpool responded on the field or from the sidelines.
Klopp made four changes at once in the 70th minute, 17 minutes after City made it 3-1.
Andy Robertson, Harvey Elliott, Mo Salah, and Diogo Jota were subbed off for Kostas Tsimikas, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Darwin Nunez, and Roberto Firmino. Too late for them to make any significant impact on the game.
With eight minutes left, Klopp made another bizarre in-game decision, replacing Cody Gakpo with James Milner, which sparked a lot of criticism from Liverpool fans on the internet.
Klopp explained post-match that “City could do what they wanted,” and Liverpool “didn’t challenge,” so the question is why did the decision to make any changes come so late?
It was necessary to make subs sooner because heads had obviously dropped and energy had quickly disappeared after the third goal.
Klopp has received criticism in the past for his substitutions, leading some to question his in-game management.
