Marcus Rashford scored his 28th goal of the season in all competitions during Manchester United’s recent 1-0 victory against Brentford at Old Trafford.
Playing as the center forward, Rashford netted the decisive goal of the match after 27 minutes. He struck the ball home from close range following Marcel Sabitzer’s headed assist. This win helped United break their three-game winless streak. It also helped them maintain their standing on level points with Newcastle United, in third place.
Rashford’s goal marked United’s first goal in the Premier League since their 3-0 victory against Leicester City on February 19th. Rashford scored twice in that game, bringing his tally to 15 league goals this season. By scoring his 28th goal of the campaign, Rashford became the first United forward since Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the 2016/17 season to reach that milestone. Bruno Fernandes had previously matched this tally in the 2020/21 season. Rashford has also scored ten match-winning goals in the Premier League this season.
Having matched the recently set tallies of Ibrahimovic and Fernandes, Rashford now aims to become the first United player in a decade to score 30 goals in a single season. The last player to achieve this feat was Robin van Persie, who scored 30 goals during the 2012/13 campaign. Before him, Wayne Rooney scored 34 goals in both the 2009/10 and 2011/12 seasons. Cristiano Ronaldo was United’s top scorer last season, with 24 goals. Rashford has already surpassed that figure by four goals. He has the opportunity to play up to 17 more matches this season, depending on their progress in the FA Cup and the Europa League. Therefore, Rashford has a good chance of breaking Van Persie’s tally and doing something that no other United forward has achieved for a decade.
