Luis Enrique is in London to speak with Chelsea about the open managerial position following Graham Potter’s dismissal on Sunday. The Blues named Potter’s assistant Bruno Saltor as interim manager while Todd Boehly-Clearlake conducted a thorough search for a third manager in 10 months.
Enrique has made steps to become the latest head coach at Stamford Bridge, where a few other candidates have already received consideration. The former boss of Spain and Barcelona is currently in London for negotiations.
The Blues are stepping up their efforts because they have a Champions League quarterfinal matchup against Real Madrid coming up. Julian Nagelsmann, Mauricio Pochettino, Ruben Amorim and Oliver Glasner are currently other candidates for the position.
Enrique, who hasn’t managed since leaving Spain following their World Cup exit, has been open about his desire to move to a new league, stating: “I follow above all the Premier [League] because I would like to go to England to work.
“I wouldn’t go to any team but to one that could do important things, which greatly reduces the number. I don’t put my hopes up, really, because there are many candidates.
“I am lucky because my personal life fills me up. That it takes longer, that no offers arrive, well, it is what it is. I would go to a team with possibilities. That doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t work in Spain.”
Enrique had great success with Barcelona in La Liga, managing one of the greatest squads ever seen. His love of the Premier League stretches before that though. In 2013 Enrique admitted: “I’d like to manage in England at some point. My wife wouldn’t like the weather, she’s from Barcelona and likes the sun. It would depend on the team and the football they played.”
